Richard’s work in digital media has been around three principal areas:

  1. the impact of digital technology on the film industry

  2. developing digital media and animation companies and activities

  3. digital media projects as drivers of regeneration strategies

Digital Technology and Film

In 2003, Richard conducted an assignment for the UK Film Council regarding the digitisation storage and transfer issues associated with UKFC’s emerging digital cinema strategy. Since then, he has conducted other digital cinema and related (e.g. post-production) projects, including for EM Media.

Digital Media Advisory

Richard has advised both public policy bodies and companies on strategies to develop digital media activity. On the public side, clients include Scottish Enterprise, Screen West Midlands, and Northwest Regional Development Agency (regarding the BBC move to Salford). Private sector work is confidential, but clients include major regional television production companies and smaller independents.

Digital Media and Regeneration

Richard has been increasingly working on projects which underscore the broader impacts of media - cultural, economic and social. One area for this work has been regeneration policy. In 2004, he worked  for Northwest Regional Development Agency on the feasibility of a digital media cluster in the Manchester/Salford border area. He also led the team that advised Birmingham City Council on the feasibility of a digital media quarter in the Eastside regeneration area of Birmingham.
